THE Naruto The franchise is filled with many powerful weapons and tools. However, some of the most legendary and revered items are known as the Precious Tools of the Sage of the Six Paths. According to legend, these were tools that were once wielded by the Sage of the Six Paths himself—the legendary figure who supposedly founded ninjutsu and bestowed chakra upon this world.
The Treasure Tools were said to surpass even the greatest Kage in power. They consist of five intricate artifacts, each possessing unique and powerful properties. So, what exactly are these famous Treasure Tools, and what abilities do they possess?
The Treasured Tools of the Legendary Sage of the Six Paths, also known as the Sacred Treasures of the Six Paths, are a set of powerful tools that were originally wielded by the legendary Sage of the Six Paths himself. These tools are considered to be the most powerful ninja tools in existence, with the ability to surpass even the Five Kage when their power is demonstrated. However, utilizing the full power of the treasures requires an immense amount of chakra, so much so that a normal shinobi would lose their life attempting to do so.
The Five Treasures have been passed down in Kumogakure since ancient times. Eventually, they came into the possession of the infamous Gold and Silver Brothers. Due to their immense chakra reserves that were augmented by a small portion of the Nine-Tails' chakra, the brothers were among the few capable of wielding the tools without risking fatal consequences. Wielding these powerful weapons, the Gold and Silver Brothers were able to push the Second Hokage and Second Raikage to their limits in a surprise ambush during a peace ceremony. Of the Five Treasures, Kumogakure was only able to retrieve the Kohaku no Jōhei from the brothers. The Third Raikage later used this tool to seal the Eight-Tails whenever its attacks threatened the village.
The Bashōsen: Fan Sword of the Five Elements
First appearance | Naruto Shippūden – Episode 269, “Words Without Good” |
---|---|
Handlers | Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, Kinkaku, Tenten |
One of the precious tools is the Bashōsen, a large fan capable of generating all five basic nature transformations with ease. Simply by commanding it mentally, the Bashōsen can produce substantial amounts of the desired element when waved by its user.
Kinkaku demonstrated the fan's defensive ability in the anime, using it to protect himself from Darui's powerful Storm Release technique. When not in combat, Kinkaku could store the Bashōsen within his own body, withdrawing it from his mouth as needed.
Even after being reincarnated by Kabuto Yakushi during the Fourth Shinobi World War, Kinkaku still possessed the Bashōsen until he abandoned it in his fight against Darui. Tenten later found the fan on the battlefield and briefly utilized its power against Kakuzu, destroying his lightning-natured mask. However, she fainted soon after due to the tremendous chakra absorption required to wield one of the Six Paths Sacred Treasures.
After the war's conclusion, Tenten chose to display the Bashōsen alongside two other precious tools, the Benihisago and the Kōkinjō, in his newly established weapons shop as a testament to its immense strength and historical significance.
Bashōsen: Fire Coil
Using Bashōsen, the user waves the fan and releases a huge trail of intense flames that rushes towards the intended target.
Bashōsen: Wind Coil
By swinging the Bashōsen, the user creates a powerful gust of wind, powerful enough to destroy Kakuzu's lightning mask.
The Benihisago: The Gourd That Seals the Soul
First appearance | Naruto Shippūden – Episode 267, “The Brilliant Military Advisor of the Hidden Leaf” |
---|---|
Handlers | Darui, Ginkaku, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, Tenten |
Another sacred treasure is the Benihisago, a huge brown gourd wrapped in red cloth. It has the ability to capture a person's "word soul" through the command "record". Once the target's word soul has been extracted by the Kōkinjō and separated from their body by the Shichiseiken, it is absorbed into the gourd.
Whoever utters the most commonly used word in life, or says a homophone of it, will be sucked in. Even prolonged silence can trigger the suction. However, if the victim changes the most common word, the suction will be stopped. He remained capable of sealing those reanimated by Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation even after its release. However, Darui was able to free Samui and Atsui after acquiring it alongside the captured Kōkinjō.
Ginkaku kept the Benihisago tied around his neck for easy carrying via a rope attached to the Kōkinjō when not using it in combat. Tobi later stole both tools to allow the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to absorb their powers. With the tailed beasts sealed within him, Madara ejects the Benihisago, as he no longer needs its abilities.
The Kohaku no Jōhei: The Lightning Pot of Kumogakure
First appearance | Naruto Shippūden – Episode 244, “Killer B and Motoi” |
---|---|
Handlers | A, Darui, Ginkaku, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, Kinkaku, Tenten |
The Kohaku no Jōhei is a unique and powerful tool that functions similarly to the Benihisago, being able to seal targets that respond when called upon by the user. However, it requires less preparation than the Benihisago. The pot is adorned with the kanji for lightning and has a thick rope wrapped around the rim. Its sealing abilities are so potent that those sealed within it cannot escape, even when the summoning techniques are finished.
Kumogakure was fortunate enough to wrest this particular tool from the Gold and Silver Brothers after they initially possessed all five treasures. The Third Raikage considered the Kohaku no Jōhei invaluable for temporarily containing the Eight-Tails during times of loss of control by its jinchūriki. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Darui utilized its sealing function on Kinkaku, though the pot was eventually taken by Tobi and consumed by the Demonic Statue to absorb Kinkaku's Nine-Tails chakra.
After the Statue's transformation and Madara taking control of the Ten-Tails, he expelled the Kohaku no Jōhei. Tenten secured the pot in hopes of using its powers against Madara.
The Kōkinjō: the rope that binds the soul
First appearance | Naruto Shippūden – Episode 267, “The Brilliant Military Advisor of the Hidden Leaf” |
---|---|
Handlers | Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, Kinkaku, Tenten |
The Kōkinjō is a thick rope that has the ability to extract a person's "word soul" through the verbal command "Tie and remove". Anyone the rope comes into contact with can have their word soul extracted in this manner, allowing it to be cut by the Shichiseiken. An aura is generated that forms additional ropes, extending its range.
When not in combat, Ginkaku carried the Kōkinjō and used its rope to tie the Benihisago around his neck for easier carrying. In battle, Kinkaku would wrap the rope around his arm, likely to more easily attack opponents with his abilities.
Later, the Kōkinjō was sealed within the Kohaku no Jōhei along with Kinkaku, who was then fed to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to revive the Ten-Tails. After the conclusion of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Kōkinjō ended up in Konohagakure, in Tenten's newly established weapons shop, where it was proudly displayed alongside other sacred treasures such as the Benihisago and the Bashōsen.
The Shichiseiken: The Cursed Blade
First appearance | Naruto Shippūden – Episode 269, “Words Without Good” |
---|---|
Handlers | Darui, Ginkaku, Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki |
The Shichiseiken is a flat, light blue sword with a brown talisman hanging from its base. By uttering the verbal command "curse", it can sever the word soul of anyone struck by the Kōkinjō's abilities, allowing the soul to then be absorbed into the Benihisago.
Using the sword in this manner “curses” the victim – if they later say out loud the word they used most often in their life, they will be sucked into and trapped within the Benihisago. The sword will simultaneously inscribe this trigger word on its blade. The user can bend the blade to hide this word from the victim. If the most frequent word changes, the inscription will update accordingly.
When not in battle, Kinkaku could store the sword within his own body, taking it out of his mouth as needed for combat. It is currently the only one of the six Treasure Tools whose whereabouts remain unknown, as the other four were possessed by Tenten after the Fourth Great Ninja War.
