Fans of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”received a dose of hope after CD Projekt has announced that it is “definitely” planning more animated projects set in the “Cyberpunk 2077” universe. During the company's most recent earnings call, co-CEO Michał Nowakowski was asked about the possibility of seeing more projects in the pop culture space and whether the beloved anime, created in collaboration with TRIGGER and Netflix, could get a second season.

While in the past both Nowakowski and other CD Projekt executives have insisted that “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” would not continue past its first season, this time their response was more encouraging. While he didn't confirm a second season, he made it clear that fans should expect more animated projects within the Cyberpunk universe. We're definitely planning to do more in terms of animation with Cyberpunk 2077, so hopefully that's a sufficient answer.“Nowakowski stated.”So expect to see more, but that's all I can say for now.“.

“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” premiered in September 2022 and was met with praise from fans and critics. The series, animated by Japanese studio TRIGGER under the supervision of CD Projekt, is set in the Cyberpunk universe created by Mike Pondsmith and serves as a prequel to the game Cyberpunk 2077, taking place approximately one year before the events of the game. Acclaim for the series focused on its character development, animation, and world-building, making it an instant success.

The impact of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” was such that it sparked a resurgence of interest in the original video game, which saw more than a million daily players join the experience. Additionally, fans were so fascinated by the anime's story that elements like Cyberpsychosis were added to the game through mods, extending the series' influence beyond its original format.

In October 2022, Satoru Honma, community manager at CD Projekt in Japan, announced that there were no plans to continue the series, stating that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was conceived as a standalone work. However, with Nowakowski's recent statement, fans' hopes of seeing more animated content within the Cyberpunk universe have been renewed.

The Cyberpunk franchise continues to expand in other directions, including books, comics, and even a mysterious live-action project, not to mention the game's sequel, which is currently in the early stages of development. While there are no concrete confirmations yet about a second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the possibility of more animated projects has rekindled fan enthusiasm.
