“Undead Unluck,” which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2020, has been a popular, if somewhat niche, manga. The announcement of its first anime adaptation by the prestigious studio David Production in 2022, known for titles such as “JoJo's Bizarre Adventure” and “Fire Force”, was seen as an indication that the series' popularity would grow rapidly. The first season of the anime aired from October 2023 to March 2024, receiving good reviews but moderate viewership. In August 2024, a sequel was announced as a one-hour special, set to premiere in late 2025, indicating that the series had the potential to continue growing.

However, the recent chapter of the manga left many fans with mixed feelings. The abrupt jump to the final battle omitted several plotlines and side battles that readers had hoped to see developed, raising concerns that the series finale was being rushed. Furthermore, recurring low ratings in Shonen Jump's biweekly surveys, in which readers rate series on a scale of 1 to 20, have further fueled fears. Out of 43 issues published in 2024, Undead Unluck received a rating of 10 or lower on 33 occasions and a rating of 15 or lower on 24 occasions.

Recent Shonen Jump history shows that several low-rated manga have received abrupt endings, raising alarm among “Undead Unluck” fans. Followers of the series have expressed their anguish on social media, arguing that “Undead Unluck” has been a comfort in difficult times and one of the reasons they continue to read the magazine. Many have called on Shueisha, the publisher of Weekly Shonen Jump, to move the series to other platforms, such as Shonen Jump Plus or Shonen Jump GIGA, in the hope that the story can continue without being affected by electoral pressure.

Some fans have also pointed out that with the recent end of “My Hero Academia” and the imminent end of “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “One Piece” on the horizon, Shueisha may be trying to make room for new series, which fuels the theory that “Undead Unluck” could be being cut to make room for other works. Despite this, no official announcement has been made confirming the ending of “Undead Unluck,” leading some to speculate that the author, Yoshifumi Tozuka, could be preparing a plot twist or that this is just the beginning of an extensive final arc that encompasses several side battles and the development of dangling subplots.

For now, fans of “Undead Unluck” are left waiting to see what happens next, hoping that the story’s conclusion will do justice to all the characters and arcs that made it a beloved series, albeit not without its difficulties along the way. The fate of the series remains uncertain, but the passion of its fans remains strong as they continue their efforts to prevent what they fear could be a premature end.
