Kagurabachi is the hope for Shonen Jump

When people think about Weekly Shonen JumpThe titles that immediately come to mind are probably well-established hits, such as “My Hero Academia“, “One Piece” the “Dragon Ball“. The Japanese publisher Shueisha recently revealed which series it believes will retain the next generation of Shonen Jump readers.

Recently, a popular Japanese TV show called Manganuma focused on “Kagurabachi“, by Takeru Hokasonoa new action manga that began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in September 2023. According to Manganuma's showrunners, Kawashima and Yamauchi, “Kagurabachi” has already become a huge hit among readers, leading to it being listed as one of the most recommended titles in Animate bookstores in 2024.

Kawashima and Yamauchi also recalled a conversation with a Shueisha representative that reflects the publisher’s high hopes for the series. “They [the Shueisha employee] said they wanted Kagurabachi to lead the next generation of Shonen Jump.“, said the TV presenters.

While many Shonen Jump heroes are primarily motivated by the desire to protect others or become stronger, “Kagurabachi” is primarily a story of revenge. The story revolves around a young boy named Chihiro Rokuhira, who spends most of his youth training to become a famous blacksmith like his father, Kunishige. However, Chihiro's healthy ambitions are shattered the day his father is brutally murdered. From that day on, his new mission is to avenge his father by hunting down the killer.

Despite “Kagurabachi’s” dark premise (or perhaps in part because of it), the series has garnered a large following both domestically and internationally. Although the series currently only has one volume, it already has over 200,000 copies in circulation worldwide, including both physical and digital sales of the manga. According to Manganuma, copies of “Kagurabachi” have practically flown off the shelves of Japanese bookstores, indicating a craze that shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.It's incredibly popular.
