Several members of the staff and voice cast have commented on this return (which animenga super-experts have claimed “would be impossible”):
- Tatsuya Ishihara (director): «I'm Tatsuya Ishihara from Kyoto Animation! I was the director of the television series Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon S. This time, Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon will become nothing less than a theatrical film! Some of you may have already suspected it, but this time it's Kanna's story, the one we've all been waiting to see on the big screen. It's going to be a great adventure full of action and emotions! Kanna, Kobayashi-san, Tohru, and the rest will cross the television screen to wreak havoc all over the big screen. We're working hard to bring you something really fun! Looking forward to it!».
- Mutsumi Tamura (voiced by Kobayashi-san): «Making anime is hard, and I was wondering if it would be hard to make a third season… Are the fans willing to wait forever? And then suddenly a movie comes along! Dragon Maiden! It was so unexpected that I was shocked (laughs). When I saw the teaser visual, I thought it had a very serious atmosphere! Isn't it the usual hot daily routine? Is Kobayashi-san saying goodbye? What does all this mean? My head was a mess! But, if the viewers are smart… well, you know, right? I can't wait to read the script! I hope everyone is looking forward to the premiere too!».
- Yuuki Kuwahara (voiced by Tohru): «Humans! I saw them again! That was the image of Tohru that came to mind. The intense action scenes, the subtle changes in the characters’ expressions… Dragon Maiden It is a work that, no matter how many times you look at it, always offers new discoveries. It was created with such care and detail that I once thought: 'Someday I would like to see it on the big screen…'. And now we can see it again! I will turn this happiness into power and give it my all to live like Tohru. Please have my support!».
- Maria Naganawa (voiced by Kanna): «I'm so excited to see the characters in motion again, to reunite with the production team and my castmates! I also feel very grateful to have the opportunity to express everything I feel about this work as Kanna, and I will try even harder to deepen Kanna's charm. I will do my best!».
In turn, Cool-kyou Shinja publish the manga in the magazine Monthly Action from the publisher Futabasha since May 2013. The anime adaptation so far has a total of twenty-five episodes (plus a variety of OVAs), produced by the studios Kyoto Animation and released during Winter-2017 (January-March) and Summer-2021 (July-September).
Synopsis of Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon
As Kobayashi prepares to start a new day at work, she opens the door to her apartment and is met with an unusually frightening sight: the head of a dragon staring at her from the balcony. Immediately, the dragon transforms into a beautiful, plump, and energetic young woman dressed as a maid, who introduces herself as Tooru.
It turns out that the stoic programmer had crossed paths with the dragon the night before on a drunken excursion into the mountains, and since the mythical beast had nowhere else to go, she offered her a place to stay at her home. Thus, Tooru arrived to take advantage of the offer, willing to repay her savior's kindness by working as her personal maid. Although deeply regretting her words and reluctant to follow through on her promise, a mixture of guilt and Tooru's incredible dragon abilities convince Kobayashi to take the girl in.
