The long-awaited remake of the classic anime “Rating 1/2“, produced by the renowned studio MAPwill be released on October 5th in Japan, and Netflix has already revealed the Latin-Spanish dubbing casttriggering a wave of reactions among fans. Unlike the original 90s series, where the voices became a symbol of an entire generation, this new version opted to a mostly new castwhich generated controversy.

Elliot Leguizamo will voice Ranma Saotome in his male form, and Alicia Velez will do the same with the female version of the character, replacing Carlos Hugo Hidalgo and Sister Carmonawho brought Ranma to life in the original version. However, Rossy Aguirre like Akane Tendo, Bard Miranda as Soun Tendo, and Mayra Arellano and Kasumi Tendo are the only members of the original cast who will reprise their characters, a fact that has not been enough to appease critics.

The reveal of the new dubbing cast It didn't take long to attract criticism of the most nostalgic followers. The community expressed its discontent, especially because much of the original cast was willing to reprise their roles in this new adaptation. However, the decision to recast most of the characters left many perplexed.

Fans' comments were quick to arrive and opinions were diverse:

  • «Akane's voice... sounds strange».
  • «What a horrible dubbing, the same generic voices as always, the same dubbing 'actors' who don't even try to modulate their voices... as always, it's better to watch it in the original language. It seems like the 'actors' are reading the script in front of the microphone and that's it, no emotion.».
  • «Wow, for those who complain if they bring the originals 'oh they look old' if they bring a new cast 'oh they look boring, they look like AI' wow!! No chili suits them, they don't suck and they don't know dubbing and they are acting like experts, they touch the grass».
  • «The dubbing was very poorly directed, all the voices sound forced and even generic, no talking! I'll watch it in its original language with subtitles».
  • «What the hell did they do with their original voices???? ONE THING THEY HAD TO DO: BRING BACK THE MAIN VOICES. I'VE BEEN ASKING FOR THIS MY WHOLE LIFE, only my poor Akane is left».
  • «But what a horrible voice they gave Akane, it can't be. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Candiani's work».
  • «The voices are fucking me! It's not Ranma and Akane. We'll have to watch it in Japanese, because there they have the original cast.».
  • «Latino otaku tend to get very upset about voice actor changes, and while it's understandable to change an anime like Ranma 1/2 that's been off the air for almost 20 years, Akane's new voice isn't very convincing.».
  • «In the trailer the dubbing is done faster, I'm sure it will be much better in the anime. I don't mind the original actors not being there. These new ones are enough for me. Also, I've never seen Ranma 1/2 in Japanese and this will be a good opportunity to do so and then I'll watch it dubbed.».
  • «If Akane's voice actress didn't sound the same anymore, they would have looked for a new voice that would make us believe she's a teenager, after all most have a new voice».
  • «Ranma's new voices don't convince me, they don't have the energy and typicality that Carlos Hugo Hidalgo and Irma Carmona gave him. I like Rossy Aguirre, but I think he should have better direction. I hope the original voices return and I hope they don't change to Happosai.».
  • «Well... it's not so bad, I like the new voices. The wait is becoming eternal».
  • «In the end, people don't agree. No one wants the classic voices or the new ones. Don't overdo the dubbing, it's not like they're using talent to get attention. Let's be more responsible when giving feedback to a medium, company or service.».
  • «Let's pretend this is a surprise and that they definitely didn't leak the anime before it was even announced.».
  • «Oh come on, don't fuck with me... you're telling me they're bringing Rossy Aguirre as Akane but not bringing Carlos Hugo Hidalgo as Ranma, who is currently active? Pffff... fall».
  • «You may ask why didn't they call Carlos Hugo Hidalgo for Ranma? I wanted to see him in his original role.».
  • «And if the voice is this, and if the opening, this, that. If you want 'the original voices' so badly, watch the classic series, it still exists. This is a different product, even though in Japanese the original voices have been preserved, everyone already does the exquisite ones».
  • «This dub, except for one voice, reeks of horror. Did they really not make an effort to find more original voices?».
  • «The voices seem a little weird, but since it's an intro I assume it was rushed and the voices weren't very polished. Even so I don't dislike them at all, I'll wait for the first chapters, I can't wait to see Ranma 1/2».
  • «I think Hugo's voice as Ranma was missing, at least the main couple should be the same as in the past, just like in Japan they called the veterans, I think the same should have been done in the translation. The voice mismatch is very noticeable, it doesn't even sound like the age, young and old voice».
  • «Just for that I was going to pay Netflix, but if only Akane is the original voice, I think it's better not to pay anything, I'd rather watch the previous series.».
  • «Akane's voice actress, Rossy Aguirre, shouldn't have played her again, her voice already sounds very worn out and forced, the best thing would be to pass the baton to a new actress, she was already the voice of a generation and we are very grateful to her, but times change.».
  • «I want the original voices to come back, I appreciate Rossy Aguirre's return, but in this trailer it looks weird. But I would much rather hear most of the voices I heard in my childhood again.».
  • «It sounds different from the previous version, I don't dislike it but Akane's voice sounds weird, I hope it sounds better in the chapters».
  • «As scary as the dubbing is, the good thing is that unlike the original series, we will now have the option to watch it in its original language and without fillers.».
  • «It's good that they're going to subtitle it because today's voice actors leave a lot to be desired in general.».

The remake of “Ranma 1/2” created great expectations and also a good dose of nostalgia among fans of the classic series. While some fans are willing to give the new voices a chance, others choose to relive the magic of the original series, where each voice marked an era. We'll just have to wait for the premiere to see if the dubbed version can capture the essence that so many remember fondly.
