The “Maid Land” event, held recently in Guatemala, went viral on social media after a peculiar activity Inside its premises, it triggered a wave of comments and criticism. During the event, a “waifu auction” was held, where attendees could bid for the opportunity to hang out with cosplayers participating as maids. What caught the most attention was that one of the participants paid 600 quetzales (about US$ 80) for a meeting with the cosplayer Centauro Orellana Cerna, known on social media as @centauro2324.

The cosplayer involved, Centauro Orellana Cerna, commented that she entered the auction “as a joke” and she was surprised at the amount one of the participants was willing to pay to be with her. The meeting included going out to eat, having coffee inside the event space, taking photos together, among other activities.. However, what seemed to be a fun moment soon became the center of attention on social media, where many users have criticized the high price paid for what they consider insignificant rewards.

The video of the moment quickly went viral, accumulating a large number of comments on various platforms. Some users did not hesitate to criticize the decision of the participant who paid 600 quetzales, considering that the money could have been better spent on other things. Among the most notable comments, some expressed their astonishment and others simply mocked the situation:

  • «With 600Q you are already paying a premium price».
  • «What was gained? I don't understand».
  • «And I feel bad about buying a DLC».
  • «Every day we are worse; where have moral values and respect for dignity remained? This is a tragedy.».
  • «What a creep this mother is».
  • «Q600??? With that I bought the Guatemalan national team's long-sleeved away shirt 🥵 and had enough left over for a stadium ticket».
  • «Nooo, 600 quetzales is 15 Little Caesars pizzas».
  • «Thank God I stopped going to conventions 10 years ago 😂 what has all this become hahahaha».
  • «This shiver is part of the first world, don't worry».
  • «Just imagine the smell of that place, don't even mention the goosebumps».

However, not all comments were mocking. Some users expressed their displeasure with what they saw as a sign of deterioration of values and morals in society:

  • «Every day we are getting worse; where have moral values and respect for dignity remained? This is a tragedy; where is the culture of going to zone 4? Falling in love with 'Daddy, can you buy me a drink'. This is no longer healthy, it is not natural.».
  • «Apology for human trafficking».
  • «Is it me or did a friend of hers basically sell her out? Cloudy».
  • «How aggressive the comments are. It seems like a fun thing to do to me. The idea of maids is that they are girls who serve you with respect and kindness. Come on, it's an act, but if you're not used to this treatment on a daily basis, it can be comforting.».

The “Maid Land” event and its “waifu auction” made it clear that what for some is a fun activity, for others represents a worrying deviation from otaku culture towards practices that could be considered questionable. Ultimately, this auction highlighted tensions within the community about what is and is not acceptable in the celebration of shared passion.
