Mobile Suit Gundam Otaku Explains His Mecha Wedding Cosplay

THE Mobile Suit Gundam The franchise is incredibly popular, with anime fans all over the world loving the iconic mecha series. For many, the most beloved aspect is obviously the mobile suits – the mecha seen in various anime – with one fan turning the giant robots into the ultimate fashion statement.
A former Twitter user, X, has now gone viral for appearing in a makeshift mobile suit in a somewhat unusual location. Rather than cosplaying at a convention or similar fan-focused event, the individual wore the costume to a wedding reception. The result was a truly hilarious form of fandom that may not have been as out of place as it initially seemed.

Gundam Fan Had the Best Fashion Sense at a Wedding Reception
Featured on X by user Zgokzogok, the now infamous wedding outfit shows just how popular the Gundam franchise is. According to the user, when they were asked to wear a suit to a wedding reception, they took advantage of the logical loophole and showed up in a homemade recreation of a mobile suit. The mech in question was, of course, the iconic RX-78-2 Gundam from the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime that started the franchise in 1978. Of course, it is much smaller than the one seen in the anime, allowing Zgokzogok to safely interact with others and even participate in a celebratory libation, as seen above.
The need for such “formal” attire may not have been entirely necessary, however. Despite the user saying that he was instructed to wear a suit, others in the background of the image are seen wearing slightly more casual clothing. In fact, one man is even seen wearing a hoodie, suggesting that high-class clothing was unnecessary. However, the homemade mobile suit certainly stood out at the event regardless, likely catching the attention of many people, especially given the popularity of the franchise.

Gundam is still one of Japan's biggest anime brands
From 1979 onwards, the Mobile Suit Gundam The franchise kicked off the “Real Robot” subgenre of mecha anime. Following the series, several similar mecha shows were produced to emulate its success. The classic “Universal Century” timeline of Gundam has been continually explored through various anime and manga sequels. There have also been numerous spinoffs and projects set in other continuities, including the "Cosmic Age" timeline of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and its recent cinematic sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom.
Amidst this popularity and sales of Gunpla plastic model kits, Gundam has become one of the most recognizable properties in Japan. Multiple generations have grown up with different versions of the series. This has manifested itself in gigantic, life-size recreations of the mobile suits that can actually move and light up. There are even Gundamthemed manholes in every prefecture in Japan, turning the franchise into an art form that beautifies the city. So while it may be an unconventional form of wedding attire, it probably wasn't an entirely undesirable interpretation.
