The r/anime communityone of the largest and most active on the Reddit platform, recently conducted a survey to select the best harem animesa subgenre that has been a mainstay in the anime industry for decades. With a total of 1,129 users participating, the survey highlighted not only the popularity of this type of story, but also the diversity of opinions and the wide range of titles that fans consider representative of the genre.
The survey allowed participants to select up to 10 anime that they considered worthy of being among the best in the harem genre. To give greater weight to user preferences, a scoring system was implemented in which the first place received 3 points, the second and third place received 2 points, while the other teams received 1 point each.
This voting method allowed the community to reflect more accurately which animes are most appreciated within the genre and which ones stand out, not only for their global popularity, but also for meeting the key elements that define a harem.
One of the most interesting aspects of this research was the debate it generated about what actually counts as a harem anime. Although the basic structure of the subgenre involves a character, usually male, surrounded by several love interests vying for his attention, interpretations vary greatly among fans. Some consider romantic balance to be key, while others look to harem anime for comedic exploration or bizarre situations that lead characters to interact in unique ways.
In the r/anime poll, users not only chose their favorite titles, but also shared their opinions on what elements make a harem memorable. Is it the protagonist's charisma that makes the difference? Or is the dynamics between the characters and their relationships what's most important? These types of debates have always accompanied the genre, and the poll provided a space for fans to discuss and share their opinions.
