Of course, Oda was always going to reveal some big secrets about the world in the Wano arc that focused on Vegapunk, and that's exactly what happened. In fact, Oda even touched on the secrets of the Void Century in this arc, though only to a limited extent. It also seems that another Poneglyph reader has appeared in the story, and that makes things a lot more interesting.

The Ohara Scholars and the Poneglyph Readers

The Oharans were avid readers of Poneglyphs

Ohara

Almost 22 years ago, on the island of Ohara, there were many scholars who were obsessed with the idea of Poneglyphs. Poneglyphs are known to be stones that carry a certain message in an ancient language that cannot be deciphered by the common people of the world. The World Government has forbidden the deciphering of these Poneglyphs, and doing so could lead to serious consequences. However, knowing that history is a gift that must be studied, and that these Poneglyphs contain messages from the Ancient Kingdom, the scholars of Ohara decided to research them against the wishes of the Government.

In other words, I took everything Oharans discovered and memorized it. It's all in my head and I continued the research!

They did this in complete secrecy; however, they were eventually discovered. When this happened, most of the scholars who were able to read Poneglyphs were all eradicated. Nico Robin was the only one who was allowed to live and this was due to Saul doing his best to save her and later Aokiji sparing her life as well. All of the other scholars of Ohara gave their lives for what they believed in and did their best to keep or stay alive. At the time, although it was believed that Ohara had been completely crushed, the events that were revealed later confirmed that Ohara had not lost the battle yet. Ohara still lives and the aftermath of the Ohara Incident that was finally revealed to fans in the Egghead Island arc is much more interesting.

The consequences of the so-called Ohara Buster

The knowledge of Ohara and the secrets of the void century have been rescued

After the Buster Call that happened in Ohara, something absolutely incredible happened that was revealed to fans in the Egghead Island arc. Fans already knew that before Ohara was reduced to ashes, the scholars did their best to save the books. They took all the books that were used for research and historical records and threw them into the lake outside the Tree of Knowledge. All the books in Ohara were thrown away and this was the only treasure they wanted to keep. Even though Ohara was completely devastated, the books ended up surviving and this is something that fans also knew back then. What fans didn't know was that the books were eventually recovered. This was revealed to fans in the Egghead Island arc by Vegapunk himself. These books were collected by none other than the Giants of Elbaf, most likely led by Saul.

Through the tenacity of a group of excellent archaeologists, I inherited some texts and several ponegliffs, which I deciphered!

All of these books were transported to Elbaf and are likely stored in some library there at this point. When Vegapunk and Dragon came to pay their respects to the fallen people of Ohara, fans were able to clearly see the Giants transporting all of the books from the lake and taking them back to their land. It has also been established that Vegapunk has a good relationship with the Giants of Elbaf and has even visited the land itself once.

One Piece: The Cross Guild's Role in the Final Saga, Explained

The Cross Guild has a big role to play in the Final Saga of One Piece.

Vegapunk himself has said that he has decided to continue the work of the Ohara scholars and continue researching the Poneglyphs. This alone means that Vegapunk knows how to decipher the ancient language. This should come as no surprise to fans. From the beginning, fans knew that Vegapunk was the smartest person on the planet. The fact that he had the same tools to decipher the Poneglyphs as the Ohara scholars was basically a giveaway from the beginning. Furthermore, Vegapunk has long mentioned that he has continued Ohara's work, and all of his research is saved in his brain.

Vegapunk's Poneglyphs Research

Vegapunk deciphered Poneglyphs all by himself

If all of that wasn't enough, Vegapunk went on to explicitly mention in One Piece chapter 1114 that he had committed a grave sin: researching the Poneglyphs. By deciphering the Poneglyphs himself and continuing the research of others, Vegapunk was able to extrapolate the truth about the Void Century. Of course, he still doesn't know exactly what happened during this 100-year void, but he only knows bits and pieces here and there. Vegapunk began his story by talking about an individual who was born 900 years ago, with a stretchy and elastic body like the Sun God Nika from the fables of Elbaf, named Joy Boy. He then goes on to say that Joy Boy was the first pirate in history and the first to take to the seas, probably in search of adventure.

It is highly likely that Vegapunk will continue to convey this message in the next chapter as well and reveal more information regarding the Void Century. Most importantly, what fans need to keep in mind is that it has now been confirmed that Vegapunk himself deciphered the Poneglyphs and that he is also a Poneglyph reader. Unfortunately, Vegapunk is dead. However, some of his satellites are still alive. It remains to be seen whether they have the same ability or not. However, it is highly likely that by the end of this arc, none of the Vegapunks will actually be alive.

Still, it's incredibly fun to see another Poneglyph reader in the story. That's not all. It's highly likely that there will be yet another Poneglyph reader in One piece soon, and that's Saul. Fans know that he was the one who led the removal of the books from the lake beneath the Tree of Knowledge to Elbaf. He's remained there ever since and become a scholar. It would be absurd for him not to have researched these books and stones at the same time. In the Elbaf arc, fans will be able to meet another Poneglyph reader in One Piece in the form of Saul, which makes things that much more exciting.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by fans officially and for free in Shonen Jump and Manga Plus application. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1115, is set for May 26, 2024.
