1. Deadman Wonderland

A dark and violent anime follows the sole survivor of the classroom massacres by a mysterious man, Ganta. Framed as the carnage he has locked away in Deadman Wonderland, the most twisted prison ever built. In Deadman Wonderland, prisoners are forced to participate in brutal death matches for public entertainment, which is one of the ways in which prisoners sentenced to death are executed.

Ganta meets an unusual prisoner named Shiro and they become friends in this prison. Later, Ganta discovers her strange ability to wield her spilled blood as a weapon in which he can bond with the murderous man. It is a horror anime mixed with action and of course romantic elements involving Ganta’s feeling towards his classmate, Shiro.

2. Elfen Lied

 

The story of Elfen Lied focuses on a new mutant species of human who resemble humans in appearance but have psychic powers and small horns on their foreheads. Lucy is one of them who is being experimented on at the Kamakura research center and managed to escape. Her injury caused her to develop a secondary personality known as Nyuu, who acts like a child. This is when she meets Kouta and his cousin Yuka and lives with the threats of the Special Assault Team to recapture her.

The Elfen Lied anime will offer strong character development and a captivating storyline. The relationship between Kouichi and Nyuu, who is actually Lucy, grows over time and we will witness love, loss, and acceptance in Elfen Lied.

3. Sankarea

 

The zombie waifu is real!!! Sankarea revolves around the relationship between Chihiro Furuya and a zombie girl named Sanka Rea. Rea, who ran away from home, was unable to commit suicide, instead, she drinks a poisonous flower that turns her into a zombie. It is mixed with comedy, horror, and balances humor, drama, and horror itself, wrapping its story and giving it a unique feel. Their love and struggle, making romance a powerful element of the story.

4. Another

 

Set in Yomiyama, where there has been a curse that has been occurring for many years in Class 3-3 of the city's North Middle School. The curse causes a death streak for the student of the class. Misaki, a popular student of Class 3-3, is said to have died suddenly on the way to school and to this day the teacher and students of Class 3-3 continue to act as if Misaki is still alive, leading to a strange presence.

The story begins when Kouichi Sakakibara transfers to Class 3-3, where he meets Mei Misaki, a mysterious and quiet student. A strange phenomenon begins to occur where students and their relatives begin to die in horrific ways. This phenomenon is linked to Misaki who died in 1972 and led to the calamity that has struck almost all of Class 3-3 since 1972. This is where Kouichi and Mei Misaki set out to find a way to stop the curse.

Another one is mainly a horror anime with some romantic element in the story involving the protagonist, Kouichi Sakakibara, and Mei Misaki. But it is worth mentioning as it will offer some interesting romantic interest in an anime full of suspense and tension.

5. Mirai Nikki

 

Future Diary is best known for its pink-haired yandere girl, Yuno Gasai. A girl who is obsessed with the main character, Amano Yukiteru. The story of Future Diary centers on the deadly survival game in order to find the next god of time and space. Both Amano and Yuno will be involved in this game, where all participants are given a diary that can predict their future. Together with Yuno, they will fight for the sake of their lives and protect each other.

Romance is a major aspect of the series, as Yuno shows an obsessive love for Amano. Their relationship has a major impact on the character's development as the story progresses.

6. School Days

 

Not primarily a horror anime, School Days is a romance anime with dark and disturbing elements to the plot. It follows a shy and insecure teenager, Itou Makoto, who eventually befriends two beautiful girls, Katsura Kotonoha, a girl he has a romantic interest in, and Sekai, who offers him a job to support her romantic life. This will be the first step in their love triangle, which takes a dark turn as Makoto's selfishness leads him to unexpected events. The show will explore what the consequences of love, lust, and betrayal are.

7. Tasogare Otome x Amnesia

 

A horror romance anime about a young girl who was left to die in the old school building at Seikyou Academy. No one has any idea about her and how she died. But the story goes that her wandering spirit still haunts the school to this day. This sparks the student's interest in the paranormal investigation club, what's even more terrifying is that the club's founder is the ghost himself. Stuck between life and death, Yuuko becomes attached to Teiichi Niiya, a freshman who can see her. Together, they are uncovering many mysteries surrounding Seikyou Academy.

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is clearly a horror romance anime where the show explores the supernatural phenomenon that happens in Seikyou Academy and emphasizes the romantic feeling between Niiya and Yuuko.

8. Gosick

 

A mystery romance anime set in a 1920s European country, where a Japanese high school student Kazuya Kujo befriends a doll-like genius, Victorique de Blois. The two explore the unsolved mysteries surrounding their school, including crime, politics, and the supernatural. While Gosick isn’t a horror anime, fans of horror anime should expect something dark and suspenseful throughout the stories. The partnership between Victorique and Kazuya growing as deep as the romantic element would make the series stand out.

9. Devils Line

 

Devils Line explores the complex relationship between humans and vampires. The human is a college student, Tsukasa, who is rescued by the half-devil, Anzai, when the girl is attacked by a demon. As Anzai continues to guard her, the two struggle to maintain a relationship between the two different beings. As well as offering the romantic relationship, Devils Line also features intense action involving the dangerous creatures.

10. Blood+

 

A thrilling supernatural anime mixed with romantic elements. Blood+ follows Saya, the amnesiac girl who discovers she is a powerful vampire hunter after a man gives her a katana sword. She later battles the ravenous immortals called chiropteran monsters, creatures capable of shapeshifting and disguising themselves as humans. The romantic element of Blood+ revolves around the relationship between Saya and her love interest Haji, which adds depth to the story despite not being primarily a romance anime.
