Your Name Artist Releases New Artwork for First Anime Film 'A New Dawn'

Earlier this year, Your name Animator Yoshitoshi Shinomiya announced that he would direct Studio Outrigger's upcoming anime drama film A new dawn. Now, the animation team has revealed a gorgeous new look for the film.
An anime-centric X hub (formerly Twitter) called Anime News and Facts recently shared this artwork with its followers. The image shows an old, dilapidated building with Japanese-style architecture. A lone figure stands near a railing on the building’s roof. Notably, the artwork shows a different location and character than the first teaser image, which depicts a woman standing in front of a billowing cloud of black smoke. Shinomiya recently showcased the film at the Cannes Film Festival’s Annecy Animation Showcase, which showcases promising animation work and concepts from creators around the world.

A New Dawn Marks Your Name is the first film written and directed by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya.
Shinomiya has worked alongside acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai on a number of highly successful animated works, including Your name, Children chasing lost voices and The Garden of Words. For Your nameHe is credited with animating the iconic "flashback" sequence, a critical moment for the film's two main protagonists. A new dawn marks a major turning point in Shinomiya's career, as he is not only directing the animated film, but also writing its script.
The official Cannes website describes A New Dawn The story goes like this: “The Obinata Fireworks Factory is preparing for an administrative confiscation action tomorrow. It has been six years since Keitaro has been hiding in a closed factory creating fireworks alone, chasing an illusion of his missing father. It is the story of three young people who overcome the extreme weather conditions, disasters and environmental problems imposed on them and establish their own identities.”

U.S. distributor GKIDS has acquired the rights to several major animated works directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda.
Upcoming anime film A New Dawn was inspired by Japan's changing landscape
According to Shinomiya, he began making plans to A new dawn in 2016. At that time, he began to realize how Japan had evolved and what it would mean for future generations. Shortly after the film was announced, Shinomiya described how he was inspired by a conversation with a child. “One day, a child found a ‘sea’ in a gap in the forest and asked me a question. It was a set of solar panels that looked like nothing if you looked at them,” Shinomiya said. “I felt that the sensitivity of the next generation, which gave a new interpretation to Japan’s negative and changing landscape, was very meaningful to me.”
Shinomiya is partnering with three major animation studios to A new dawn. Asmik Ace, who facilitated the production of successful anime series such as Library Wars and Black Butler, is producing the film alongside Studio Outrigger (Egumi Legacy, A turtle's shell is a human's ribs). Additionally, a France-based production company called Miyu Productions (Anzu Ghost Cat) is co-producing A new dawn. The film's theatrical release window is set for 2025. Meanwhile, Makoto Shinkai Your name is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Prime Video.
