10 Controversial Anime Villains That Fans Love Anyway
Advertisement
Many of these villains have a sinister charm that makes them hard to dislike. Even more of them also have creative designs that audiences love to cosplay. Although the villains commit heinous crimes, many viewers find them so engaging that the villains become fan favorites.
10. Sousuke Aizen (Bleach)
Sousuke Aizen is hard to completely dislike due to his charming appearance and the fact that he was often on the good side. As a former captain of the 5th Division, Aizen appeared to be kind and gentle. He addressed his subordinates very informally and never seemed overly emotional. All of this served to make him approachable.
Unfortunately, this is far from the case. Aizen skillfully crafted his "nice guy" persona to catch everyone off guard. In reality, he's a skilled manipulator who rules his minions through intimidation. It's unfortunate that Aizen became a villain, as many fans were dazzled by his false persona.
9. Scar (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Scar is an Ishvalan bent on dispatching any Amestrian State Alchemist he encounters. He is indiscriminate and relentless in his rage, but many fans still sympathize with him due to his tragic past.
During the Ishval War, Scar's family was unceremoniously slaughtered by a malevolent State Alchemist named Solf J. Kimblee. Scar lost both his arms in the attack. Because of the brutality of Kimblee's attack, many fans believe Scar is somewhat justified in his revenge. Although he eventually becomes a quasi-ally of the Amestrians, Scar's plan remains a controversial retaliation scheme.
8. DIO Brando (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)
DIO Brando is one of anime's most charismatic villains. His exaggerated design and refusal to die make him a compelling antagonist that audiences love to hate. Not to mention his incredible Stand, "The World," which is nearly unstoppable.
While DIO is likable for his villainous brilliance, his crimes are too numerous to be forgotten. Not only did he kill his supposed best friend, Jonathan Joestar, but DIO made it his mission to end the Joestar bloodline forever. DIO is a villain who doesn't know how to abandon his treacherous ways, but fans love his trademark evil anyway.
7. Light Yagami (Death Note)
Light Yagami was initially an average and intelligent student, but he soon became a killer thanks to a mysterious Death Note. The way he evolved from simply writing names in the Death Note to creating more elaborate plans for his vigilantism is incredibly intriguing, but it doesn't excuse his actions.
Light is often praised as one of the best-written anime protagonists, but there's no doubt that he is Death Note's true villain. Although he unfortunately lets his arrogance get the better of him in the end, fans still love Light's descent into darkness throughout the show.
6. Muzan Kibitsuji (Demon Slayer)
Muzan Kibutsuji is not only a human-eating demon, but also the King of Demons. While he doesn't often meddle in human affairs, he retaliates when threatened. Not even his twelve Kisaki are safe when Kitbutsuji is on a warpath.
Kibutsuji's incredible power and shapeshifting ability capture fans' attention. He's a ruthless and petty villain who fears losing even the slightest bit of control. Unlike many antagonists, Kibutsuji has a lot to lose and will do anything or kill anyone to maintain his power.
5. Junko Enoshima (Danganronpa)
Junko Enoshima loves despair, almost as much as her fans love her. Junko's cute, punkish design makes her easy to like, but Junko is also responsible for the Ultimate Despair taking over her world.
Junko begins her quest for despair by convincing a class of high school students to commit suicide, filming it, and then showing it to others to brainwash them. She creates such chaos that the only way the heroes can think of to fix it is to destroy her memory and virtually deprogram her followers. Junko is a completely chaotic villain, but viewers can't get enough of her style and dastardly schemes.
4. Hisoka Morow (Hunter x Hunter)
Hisoka Morow is an incredibly disturbing villain in Hunter x Hunter. Not only is his clown-like appearance off-putting to many audiences, but he also has an uncomfortable obsession with Gon Freecs and Killua Zoldyck and their power. However, many fans still find him intriguing.
Hisoka's best qualities include his self-awareness of his limits and the strength of his convictions. Hisoka also occasionally allies with Gon and Killua. Unfortunately, it's still difficult to ignore his many transgressions. Not only does Hisoka act questionably toward the two young heroes, but he's also a serial killer, killing people he deems unworthy. Regardless, Hisoka still has many fans who love to cosplay as him at anime conventions.
3. Eren Yeager (Attack on Titan)
Eren Yeager is one of the most divisive anime characters. Although he starts out as a hero in Attack on Titan, Eren eventually becomes the same monster he grew up hating. Many viewers praise his personality change as a great writing decision, while others can't ignore Eren inciting genocide.
Regardless of one's side, there's no denying that Eren has become the villain. His plan to wipe out humanity (including many of Paradis's inhabitants) is deeply flawed. Yet Eren's plan is so drastic that its stunned horror compels fans and leaves them chilled every time they witness it.
2. Suguru Geto (Jujutsu no Kaise)
Suguru Geto used to be a promising Jujutsu sorcerer. He believed sorcerers existed to protect others, but he also believed sorcerers were righteous for doing so. Unfortunately, his ideology changed as he experienced more losses. Geto eventually became a murderous villain who sought to destroy any human who wasn't a sorcerer.
Considering how many people he's killed, it's surprising that so many people love Geto's character. While most people appreciate Geto's friendship with the indomitable Satoru Gojo, others can't tolerate his current ideals. As Geto's story unfolds, audiences continue to find him a fascinating character, despite his many crimes.
1. Dabi (Boku no Hero Academia)
Most fans already knew Dabi's secret in the sixth season of My Hero Academia, but it didn't diminish the spectacle of his revelation that he is Todoroki's missing brother. Dabi's flair for drama and ruthless personality solidified him as a fan-favorite villain.
Unfortunately, because Dabi is one of the most compelling villains, audiences tend to forget his past transgressions as a serial killer. With this in mind (plus Dabi's attack on Hawks, his father, and younger brother), it's hard to fully love Dabi's character. However, many audiences can't get enough of how Dabi chose to act out his family grudge in the most public way possible.
