As the story progresses, the Lunarian race proves to be far more important than any fan could have imagined. This race is directly linked to some of the greatest secrets in the world of One Piece, and the key to solving the Lunarians' greatest mysteries lies in the clues Oda left behind.

Who were the Lunars?

The Lunarians are a special winged race in the world of One Piece.

The Lunarians were a very special race in the world of One Piece. Fans are well aware that winged races exist in the world of One Piece. The first introduction to these winged races occurred during One Piece's Skypiea Arc. There, fans were introduced to names like Shandians, Skypieans, and Birkans. All of these winged races had a common characteristic, evident in the name itself: they all had wings on their backs. Of course, they couldn't use these wings to fly. However, it was a characteristic observed among the winged races of the world of One Piece, and it is what separated them from humans.

Three races are missing from my country. One of them was supposedly extinct from history itself. But you are here, king! – Great Mother

As the story progressed, Oda introduced another winged race into the world of One Piece, and interestingly, this is the only winged race in the world of One Piece. One piece with black wings instead of white. This introduction came from King the Wildfire, one of Kaido's three right-hand men and the strongest All-Star in the crew. King had enormous black wings on his back. At first, they were attributed to his Devil Fruit powers, but it soon became clear that he belonged to a special race. This clue was given to fans by Big Mom, moments after she was brought to Onigashima.

Clearly, there was something special about King, and during the attack on Onigashima, where King began fighting Zoro, secrets about the Lunarian race began to be revealed. For starters, it was confirmed that the Lunarians are an extinct race. King the Wildfire was the last known living Lunarian in the One Piece world that fans know. In fact, the World Government was still actively seeking information about King. Providing any information regarding King would yield a reward of 100 million berries. Clearly, the World Government was searching for people of this race, which suggests there is a rift between them in some way.

During the invasion, Marco also remembered Whitebeard speaking in depth about the Lunarian race. According to Whitebeard, the Lunarians were actually the Gods of the world. In fact, he believed that long before Marijoa was even created, a land of Gods existed at the top of the Red Line. This land of Gods is where the Lunarians lived, and since they held the title of Gods, they likely had tremendous powers up their sleeves.

Why were the Lunarians called gods?

The Lunarians had a special power unlike any other

The question of why the Lunarians were called Gods is very intriguing. There are two ways Oda could have formulated this idea. The first is that the Lunarians are very strong. When it comes to the races of the One piece Of course, strength is very important when it comes to how fans view them. The Lunarians were quite special. While the Giants are physically the strongest race in the One Piece world, as canonically confirmed, the Lunarians are more mystical. For example, the Lunarians have giant black wings. They have a flame on their backs that, as long as it remains lit, ensures this race can survive virtually anything. Even the most extreme conditions can be faced by the Lunarians effortlessly, as long as the flames on their backs are lit.

In combat, if they need more speed, they can extinguish the flames on their backs, which dramatically increases their speed. Only when their flames are extinguished can they be injured.

The flames on his back are burning, which means I can't hurt him yet!

While this alone makes them incredibly special, that's not all they possess. They also have the ability to freely manipulate fire. In fact, their control over fire is so strong that they can manifest magma as Flames, as seen during Zoro's battle with King. All of these factors combined make them one of the fiercest races in the world of One Piece, which is why they could have been highly respected and worshipped as gods.

However, there may be another element at play here. Fans know that the winged races of One piece The world actually originated from the Moon. The Skypieans, Shandians, and Birkans are not residents of planet Earth. After their energy source ran out, they descended from the Moon and resided on Earth in different locations. This is why the Shandians resided in the Blue Sea, while the Skypieans lived high in the Celestial Isles, along with the Birkans. It is highly likely that the Lunarians also descended from the Moon and settled atop the Red Line, creating a land so elevated that they were regarded as gods.

At the same time, fans know that these individuals who came from the Moon had their own energy sources. Perhaps this has something to do with the Mother Flame, which itself is a flame similar to the one burning on the Lunarians' backs. Perhaps there's a connection between the Mother Flame and the Lunarians' power to manipulate flames. Of course, the Mother Flame is much more potent. However, Lunarians may have the ability to manipulate these flames to a much lesser extent, which is why they are so much more special. It's for this reason that Lunarians could potentially have been called the Gods of the world.

How the Lunarians Went Extinct

The Lunarians were eventually hunted down by the government.

Of course, then, one might wonder how the Lunarians could have become extinct. The answer is obvious. During the Void Century, they likely sided with Joy Boy. This is evidenced by the fact that King was awaiting Joy Boy's return. In fact, it's entirely possible that the Lunarians were the source of one of the Ancient Weapons created by the people of the Old Kingdom, and it was likely the Ancient Weapon Uranus. It's implied that its power potentially fell into the wrong hands, which links things to the sinkhole under Enies Lobby's command. Since this war was lost by the people of the Old Kingdom, the Lunarians were likely almost completely wiped out. The few survivors that remained would likely have been scattered, leaving fans with only King in the current timeline.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by fans officially and for free in Shonen Jump and Manga Plus application. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1115, is set for May 26, 2024.
