Recently, an alleged photograph showing a derogatory message towards female cosplayers trended on social media. The photographwhich shows a girl in an extremely revealing cosplay, It also shows him standing next to a sign inviting New York Comic Con attendees to “freely abuse female cosplayers” during the event.:

  • «COSPLAY == FREE SEX – All female cosplayers at this year's New York Comic Con are prostitutes. They were paid with the price of admission and are free to use. Not all NYCC fans are prostitutes, so be respectful and use cosplayers only for sex. Thank you and have fun!».

The photograph caught many by surprise and went viral almost immediately, garnering millions of interactions and comments from the community. Fortunately, Twitter now has the option to "add context" to a misleading post, and it quickly became a target. Thus, it was finally confirmed that this photograph is an edit and that, in reality, the original poster sought to promote respect for female cosplayers:

  • «COSPLAY IS NOT CONSENT – Please don't touch anyone. If you want to take a photo with another NYCC fan, ask first and respect their right to refuse. When you're at New York Comic Con, be respectful, friendly, calm, and kind to others.».

It's common during these conventions for female cosplayers to become the center of attention, and while that's precisely their goal, they always run the risk of a pervert being in the audience. There are more than a few instances where someone takes photos up a cosplayer's skirt or even tries to grope her, taking advantage of the crowd. Many cosplayers now have to "stay alert" whenever they attend an event of this nature.

And while this viral post ended up being a joke, it didn't seem funny to those cosplayers who were sexually assaulted during an event simply for wearing cosplay. And of course, there were also comments from people who completely believed the false message:

  • «Is this real?».
  • «The fact that people believe this is real shows that no one does their own research anymore. They just believe the first thing they see online, and that seems pathetic to me.».
  • «Ironically, the girl in the photo makes, or perhaps used to make, amateur adult videos. This photo was long before OnlyFans; she just uploaded them directly to the internet.».
  • «It's amazing how attractive editions are today».
  • «Anime culture has gone to hell in just three years. Now it's full of potential sexual offenders.».
  • «The edit is old, but it will always go viral when someone posts it on social media.».
  • «This is a way to increase the number of participants in the event.».
  • «What a shame I can't afford to go, the plane ticket is very expensive.».
  • «In fact, these types of conventions are heaven for aspiring porn actresses and OnlyFans girls looking to get noticed.».
  • «I have to book my ticket to New York right now if this becomes a reality.».
  • «For those interested, the girl in the photograph is Emily Gort. And yes, she was posting pornographic videos online when she posed for this photograph.».
