Dragon Ball: Toyotaro Reveals How Involved Toriyama Was in the Manga's Creation

Last March, the unfortunate death of Akira Toriyama, the acclaimed creator of Dragon Ball. Although he maintained control and participated in some creations of his franchise, on the manga side he had already left things a bit in Toyotaro's hands. Now this mangaka talked about how this influenced his creative process for Super.
In an interview with Shonen Jump, Toyotaro talked about Dragon Ball SuperA. Particularly Trunks and Goten's arc as superheroes. Here, he said that although most of the arc was his idea, Toriyama gave him several story notes. He even helped him improve the costume designs for both characters.
According to Toyotaro, Toriyama's greatest contribution was to the story. He asserted that as the creator, he always had a say in the direction the overall plot took. So that helped keep this arc connected and aligned with what came before.

Ultimately, Toyotaro said that this helped him a lot in establishing Young Trunks' personality. After all, it is already closer to the version of the future that we saw in Dragon Ball Z and I had no clear way to distinguish the two. Here Toriyama helped him a lot by suggesting that the current Trunks should be more positive and that it was he who proposed being a hero.
