The recent anime adaptation of “Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan (My deer friend Nokotan)” has been the target of criticism due to the makes fun of the protagonist for “being a virgin”although the opening sequence was extremely popular with fans.
“Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan” tells the story of Torako, a perfect student whose past as a delinquent is unknown to her classmates. Everything changes when Nokotan, a horned transfer student, enters her life. The antlers aren't the only strange thing about Nokotan, as her deer-like nose can sniff out Torako's secret past. Whether at school or the zoo, chaos follows this doe-eyed girl every step of the way. Torako has many questions: Is Nokotan a deer, a girl, or something in between?
The anime adaptation, currently airing and produced by WIT STUDIO, has received a mix of praise and criticism. Although the opening sequence captured the attention and enthusiasm of many viewers, the anime's content generated negative reactions, mainly due to the repetitive jokes about the protagonist's virginity.
- «Virginity jokes are in poor taste and really bother me… Although I admit that in the 2000s otakus would have liked that».
- «The opening is popular, but the main content isn't up to par. The advertising was successful, but many found the anime "boring" or "too insistent and off-putting with the virginity jokes."».
- «Virginity jokes are old-fashioned and nasty jokes are too abrupt».
- «The anime was about to lose me with its lackluster humor, and the virginity jokes ended up ruining my confidence in the series' humor. I hope it improves with time.».
- «I lost interest in anime when they started making weird jokes about virginity.».

Despite these negative comments, many fans continue to tune in to the anime, hoping that the story and characters will evolve positively.
- «When someone without intelligence is given the task of making comedy, it ends up being sexual harassment or bullying instead of something funny. This anime reminds me of the lesson that it takes intelligence to make comedy.».
- «Shikanoko: I read a bit of the original, and the virginity jokes made me think it was an old work that fans were waiting to see adapted into an anime. But then I did some research and saw that it started being published in 2019, and I was surprised.».
- «Shikanoko: The comedy element didn't quite fit, and I was about to fall apart when the virginity jokes came in and ruined my confidence in the show's humor. Maybe it will improve if they put together a better team, so I'll keep watching, but I don't know.».
- «Shikanoko: The drawings are cute and the comedy is good, but the jokes about virginity and Nokotan insistently revealing personal information about Torako (her past as a delinquent), mocking her bra and saying that she wet the bed until she was 10, they are not funny at all, they are harassment.».
- «Shikanoko: As soon as they started making disgusting jokes about virginity, I lost the will to continue watching».
- «Shikanoko: I watched it because it was trending, but I found it so disgusting that I gave up after halfway through the first episode. Besides the comedy being boring, the abrupt virginity jokes are pointless. They seem to think this will attract otakus, but it's just too much.».
- «Virginity jokes are so outdated and disgusting that I couldn't stand them, but what's worse is the insidious mentality that anything can be done to smart, proud girls and that it's fun to humiliate them with sexual harassment. This attitude is disgusting and reveals an insidious resentment.».
