Long before the Five-Leaf Clover Grimoire belonged to Asta, it was actually a Four-Leaf Clover Grimoire wielded by a very different character: the leader of the Elves, Licht. At this time, the Grimoire lacked anti-magic properties; instead, it generated Sword Magic, which Licht used to summon the powerful blades that would one day become Asta's Anti-Magic Swords. In his time, Licht overcame centuries of bad relations between Elves and humans by befriending the first Wizard Emperor, Lemiel Silvamillion Clover, and later becoming engaged to his sister.

However, a ruthless demon, Zagred, secretly plotted to possess Licht and steal his Grimoire to assume full form in the human realm. At Licht's wedding ceremony, Zagred tricks the Elven Leader into believing that Lemiel murdered the Elven Tribe. The devastation of this perceived betrayal results in the corruption of Licht's Grimoire, at which point the fifth leaf of the clover manifests. Although the devil fails to possess Licht, the Elf is separated from his swords when he sacrifices himself to defeat Zagred. Lichita's kindness transforms Liebe into a kind-hearted being, but their time together is interrupted by Lucifero, a powerful demon seeking entry into the human realm.

Lichita ultimately saves Leibe from Lucifero's possession by sealing the boy within the Grimoire, but Lucifero unfortunately kills her before being banished to the Underworld. Alone once more, Leibe stews in rage over his loss for several more years. Before finding himself in the Human Realm, he endured relentless torture as the weakest devil in the Underworld. Like Asta, Liebe was born without magic, thus managing to cross the barrier between the two realms.
