The anime adaptation of “NieR: Automata”pleasantly surprised fans with Significant improvements in 3DCG animation quality on its Blu-ray release, after being widely criticized during its television broadcast. In image comparisons, the corrected Blu-ray version is shown on the left, while the pre-correction version is shown on the right. The difference is completely noticeablewith more fluid and detailed animation in the Blu-ray version.

The series, produced by Images A-1faced several challenges throughout its production, including a poor production schedule which affected the visual quality of some episodes during their initial broadcast. This was particularly evident in the first episode, which was considered by many to be the worst of the series due to its uninspiring visuals. However, Recent reviews reflect a notable increase in quality, especially in the scenes with the flight units.that look impressive in the most recent episodes.
Fan comments highlight the improvement: “It's no surprise that the scenes with the flying units in the final episode look incredible. That first episode was easily the worst of the series, largely due to the uninspiring visuals. Since then, everything has improved..”
Another fan pointed out the difference when comparing the versions: “Blu-ray on the left, TV version on the right. With the second part now airing and enjoying success, this looks to be one of the best anime in recent memory. I highly recommend watching it..”
- A look at the animation originally aired in early 2023.
The improved animation quality has led some to wonder whether the enhanced versions will be updated on streaming platforms like Crunchyroll, or whether these improvements are intended to encourage consumers to buy the Blu-ray edition. One fan commented: "Based solely on your screenshots and without having seen it in motion, it's definitely a noticeable stylistic shift, but both look good to me..”
Another added: “Interesting… don't they update the CGI-enhanced versions of these TV episodes on Crunchyroll or other streaming platforms? Or is this their incentive to get consumers to buy the Blu-ray edition?“The adaptation of “NieR: Automata” has been a highly anticipated project, and despite initial hurdles, it appears to be finding its way to a more polished and satisfying presentation for fans.
