What happened to the Sono Bisque Doll sequel?

Marin Kitagawa was a breath of fresh air for the anime community, as “Sleep Doll Bisque wa Koi wo Suru (My dressing darling)” quickly gained unprecedented popularity. It's no surprise that a romantic comedy received so much attention compared to other genres, but the anime was far from a typical high school story. Series like “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” give fans hope to expect better, more realistic stories about young love. Instead of focusing on toxic relationships, one-dimensional characters, and poorly written stories, anime like this promise audiences something unique, moving, and less conventional. Therefore, the anime has been acclaimed as one of the best series of its kind, especially in the modern era.

While some of the best anime romantic comedies are one-season wonders, it should come as no surprise that “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” was renewed for a second season. It's a rare phenomenon for viewers to witness the story that follows the confession. Although the anime's ending was quite satisfying, it seems audiences can't get enough of this captivating story. Regarding a possible premiere date, here's everything you need to know about season two.

“Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” plays with the trope of the popular girl who likes the unpopular boy, but its plot isn’t as superficial as it seems. At its core, the anime is a high school romantic comedy, but it dares to explore the vulnerabilities of different personalities, whether it's the introverted Gojo or the extroverted Marin Kitagawa. While under normal circumstances, a girl like Marin wouldn't look twice at a boy like Wakana Gojo, this is where the series truly shines. The interaction between Gojo and Marin isn't the culmination of toxic personal agendas or an act of insecurity. It's a mutual transaction between two young people who ultimately learn to love each other for who they are. Marin loves cosplaying, but sewing isn't her strongest skill. On the other hand, Gojo has an innate talent for designing the most beautiful outfits thanks to his work with the Hina dolls. Fate leads Marin to discover Gojo's talent and recruit him to fuel her ambition.

The series highlighted Marin as a passionate cosplayer who takes pride in what she does without caring much about what people think. That's the kind of mindset I wanted to instill in Gojo, especially when it comes to his sewing skills. Their appreciation for Gojo's talent and innocence brings them closer to the point of affection. The series is a fun journey through the joy of youth, the complexity of gender roles, and the love for what we're passionate about. As the pair spend more and more time together, they begin to experience the chemistry between them, and it's Marin who notices it first. In this way, “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” was able to use familiar tropes and make them feel new and fresh, while also introducing modern romance anime tropes.

In the final episode, Marin stars in one of the anime's sweetest confessional moments, conveying her feelings to a sleeping Gojo. The illusion of lying next to each other via video call is the perfect setting for a grand gesture, but whether their feelings reached Gojo remains a mystery. It's possible that the second season will revisit Marin's confession, exploring the possibility that Gojo overheard it. Adapting the rest of the manga so far is the most likely option, and its development points to the future of the anime. While the premise of the second season of “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” is still unknown, it is rumored that the series will focus more on Marin’s cosplay and introduce other interesting characters, such as femboy Chitose Amano. It's these aspects of the manga that make this franchise so beloved and will undoubtedly make the second season even greater.

Fans are also hoping that the next season will cover the School Festival Arc from the original manga, which will be a great homage to Gojo and Marin's cosplay ideas. Since "sick" episodes are a shojo classic and fans didn't get any in the first season, viewers will be thrilled if the sequel adapts the episodes where Gojo tends to a sick Marin.

There was a lot of speculation surrounding the second season, given that the series producer stated that there were other more “important” projects. In September 2022 it was announced that a sequel was in the works and that the romantic story would continue. The news was accompanied by an illustration by author Shinichi Fukuda. The anime series' undeniable success and growing popularity led Aniplex to announce a second season, which is thankfully in production. The production's official statement confirmed rumors of a sequel and asked for fans' support to make it a reality.

Unfortunately, the release date for the highly anticipated second season of "Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru" has not been officially announced. Fans expect the anime to premiere in late 2024, but it's all speculation until the studios' final verdict is known. It's also likely that season 2 will adapt the story after episode 40. There's still enough material left for a second season, especially since the last one ended on a cliffhanger.

What most delayed the production of the second season of “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” was the manga. The first season adapted the initial five volumes of the manga. When the second season was announced, the manga had only ten volumes. Now, the series has twelve volumes, which provides more than enough material for a new season. Waiting until this material was created prevented the series from falling into the trap of other anime that adapted the manga too quickly. We hope this means the anime sequel will arrive soon and that the second season will give fans more of what they've been craving.
