After more than four years of serialization, in the most recent edition of the magazine Weekly Shonen Sunday The final chapter of the manga written and illustrated by Kotoyama“Yofukashi no Uta (Call of the Night)”. From the previous chapters it was inferred that the end of the story would be, at the very least, bittersweet, considering the author’s background with “Dagashi Kashi“, and it seems they were right to be concerned.

In the previous chapters it was established that Nazuna Nanakusa had completely fallen in love with Kou Yamori, the protagonist, which made her afraid to bite him to drink his blood. Let's remember that there was a rumor that if a vampire fell in love with a human and sucked their blood, the human would die (there were also rumors of the reverse version, where it would be the vampire who died).
In the end, it became a situation that can be summarized like this: “I want to love you and live my life with you, but if I do that, there's a chance you might die.“Or as it was mentioned on social media: Nazuna thinks that vampire life is boring (she had mentioned this in a previous chapter) and doesn't want Kou to experience this eternal boredom.

With all this background, fans were already expecting that the ending of "Yofukashi no Uta (Call of the Night)" wouldn't be entirely satisfactory, and that seems to be the majority's opinion. Although the final chapter hasn't been translated, we can see Nazuna and Kou together in a snowy area. In the final illustration, the two are shown lying in the snow, and Kou proposes that they "chase each other to death" while Nazuna introduces him as "her lover."

It's an open ending, as the romantic situation between the two isn't fully expressed. (i.e., it is not established whether they become a couple or what their status is, at least in the preliminary translations), which left a taste in the mouth, although sweet, also bitter in the fans who followed this franchise for years:
- «It was a great trip. Yofukashi no Uta has been with me since the beginning of the pandemic. It was so much fun to read during the endless nights. I had so many things to worry about, but the feeling I found while reading it made me feel great. It made me forget for a moment that we were stuck at home, because you know, the whole point of the series was for Kou to go out all the time. It was a fun series, with many touching and funny moments, and a whole cast of captivating characters.».
- «Thank you Kou and Nazuna, we will miss you, and I'm very grateful to Kotoyama sensei. Although I'll never read Dagashi Kashi, I look forward to reading your next work. Thank you also for being there on this journey, in a series that was almost entirely improvised; it was incredible. My night has come to an end, and I hope it's come to an end for you too.».
- «I could have sworn we saw an adult Kou in some of the previous illustrations».
- «I really don't know what to think about this.».
- «I'm glad to see one last expression on Nazuna's face when she sees Kou. The last page of them lying in the snow smiling is a beautiful way to end. I'll miss this series, I hope it gets another anime season, but for now, goodnight.».
- «Well, this isn't a bad ending, but it's not a happy one either, or at least that's what it seems. I don't know how to feel about it.».
- «Nazuna said they should keep meeting until they die, so I guess when Kou is about to kick the bucket, that's when Nazuna will finally bite him and they'll die together.».
- «So why didn't Kou let it bite him? If the effects had already worn off, he would have let her bite him anyway. Just because a year has passed doesn't mean she can't kill him by sucking his blood, which is why she said they would spend the rest of their lives meeting again and again until THEY died. Because when Kou is old and on his deathbed, Nazuna will go with him.».
- «Why doesn't anyone talk about what GIANT KOU'S HANDS LOOK LIKE? Well, you know what they say about boys with big hands...».
- «I hate this ending so much, but to be honest, at least they're back together.».
- «They will stay together and she will bite him when he gets older and they will die together».
- «Probably. It's a semi-open ending, like Dagashi Kashi. It's open to the interpretation this author is known for. I mean, he's still half-vampire even after four years; he even says he's learned to control it.».
- «Yes, Nazuna said they should play hide and seek until they die and Kou had an exasperated reaction.».
- «I mean, the ending could have been worse, so I don't really care about that.».
- I don't know, man, it seems a bit disappointing. For me, a big romance fan, this isn't good. In my opinion, the story peaked with Mahiru and Hoshimi's conclusion. The manga is still good, but the relationship between Nazuna and Kou isn't very well thought out.».
- «That's what I've been saying for a long time. This ending matches Dagashi Kashi's almost exactly. So I figured the final chapter would be similar. A short time jump and they're back together.».
- «My first manga, Yofukashi no Uta, introduced me to this world, and since then, I've encountered many different works that have collectively rekindled my love for reading… manga or otherwise. It will always hold a very, very special place in my heart.».
- «I wish he would become a vampire but I'm happy either way, thank you Kotoyama, this masterpiece will always be in my mind as it holds a place in my heart that no other manga can replace.».
