With the strongest modern sorcerer seemingly back on the battlefield now, there are many questions in the minds of some fans about how this would affect the story, with some worried that it could mean Yuji's progression will be quite limited.
How Gojo died in Shinjuku
Gojo fought an intense battle against Sukuna
Gojo put up an absolutely brilliant fight against Sukuna in Shinjuku. As soon as he was released, fans knew he would eventually fight the King of Curses and show everyone his true skillset. This also turned out to be the perfect opportunity for Sukuna to show fans what he was truly capable of.
Sukuna had an added advantage in this battle, and it came through the Ten Shadows Technique, specifically Mahoraga, which helped him pave his way to victory. That said, the fight between Gojo and Sukuna was incredibly close, with one moment Gojo would be on top, and the next, Sukuna would be dominant. Fans witnessed several clashes of dominance throughout this battle, with cursed techniques being used at full throttle. Fans also saw the reverse curse technique utilized like never before in this fight, and overall, Gege did a very good job of portraying that both Gojo and Sukuna were far beyond human levels, and that others couldn't even comprehend the level at which they manipulated the cursed energy.
Goodbye, Gojo Satoru! I will never forget you as long as I live.
This was truly an incredible fight for fans, and the several chapters this battle lasted were truly the pinnacle of this story. However, in the end, there could only be one victor, and with that, fans knew that, for plot reasons, Gojo had to die. Gojo ended up being the one who fell in this battle, as Sukuna used Mahoraga's power to gain a blueprint that allowed him to expand the target of his technique to the entire world, creating the World Splitting Dismantle. This technique severed Gojo's Infinity and cut his body into pieces, leaving him dead.
Gojo's Return in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 260
Gojo appeared in front of Sukuna like a ghost
Although Gojo died in JJK By Chapter 236, the author had already laid out the path for his return. Now, this wasn't a confirmation that Gojo would return. However, it simply meant that if the author wanted Gojo to re-enter the story, he had a way to integrate him back. This is exactly what he did when Gojo met up with his friends on a plane of existence between life and death. There, the concept of going north and south was explored. Essentially, if someone was satisfied with themselves and wanted to return to their former self, they would go south. If someone wanted to start over, in a completely different direction, they would go north. Knowing Gojo, fans knew he would never be satisfied with the way things were and would likely head north.
Once again, fans were never confirmed, but the foundation for his return was laid right then and there. Things became even more solid when it was revealed that his body was transported to Shoko, an individual with a high-level Reverse Curse technique who could potentially have cured him and helped him utilize his own powers to heal himself.

Aoi Todo makes his return with Boogie Woogie in JJK. His help will be crucial in this fight against Sukuna.
Finally, in JJK Chapter 260: Gojo returned to the battlefield, moments before Sukuna attempted to expand his domain. Just as he attempted to cast his second Malevolent Shrine in a few minutes, he was distracted by someone nearby. When Sukuna looked to his left, Gojo emerged from the smoke, one eye glowing.
Sukuna saw… what his hands buried. The ghost of the strongest!
The narrator made it clear that Sukuna witnessed the ghost he had previously buried alone. At the same time, the editor confirmed that those eyes belonged to none other than Gojo, and this laid the groundwork for the return of the strongest modern sorcerer.
Why Gojo's Return Is Perfect for the Story
Gojo is necessary in the story for several reasons
Now that Gojo has returned to the story, whether as a ghost or as a man who has returned from the dead, fans may wonder whether this return is a good thing or not. The biggest concern many fans have right now is that Gojo will completely overshadow Yuji and her progress in this fight if he does return. Undoubtedly, Yuji was magnificent in his battle against Sukuna and has also reached an incredibly high level. However, it would be quite absurd to assume that he would reach a level where he would surpass Sukuna here and now. Sukuna is the strongest in history, and Yuji surpassing him in a matter of minutes would certainly not be appropriate. It would be much better if Yuji progressed in the battle alongside someone like Gojo. This doesn't mean Gojo will take center stage or fight Sukuna alone. It simply means that Gojo would fight alongside Yuji and Todo in this battle and put an end to the King of Curses forever.
Fans need to consider the fact that Gojo won't return at full strength for this battle. If Gojo were at full strength, he would crush Sukuna right here, simply because he has the means to do so, and Sukuna is incredibly weak at this point. However, Gojo's return could also mean he had to cast the Binding Vow on himself and weaken himself to return from death. This would make for a perfect battle, as a weakened Gojo, Yuji, and Todo would rise up against a weakened Sukuna and end the battle for good.
Above all, Gojo's return is perfect for this plot because there are so many loose ends he needs to tie up. Gojo needs to save Megumi and set an example. He needs to tell Megumi the truth about her father. He needs to give Suguru a proper burial, exactly as he planned. And above all, he needs to create a new era of Jujutsu, overthrowing the old, corrupt order, as previously revealed. Gojo wants to be seen as more than just the strongest, and his return facilitates that perfectly. Regardless of what fans think of his return, this is the perfect decision the author could have made, and it only elevates the story even further from here on out.
Jujutsu Kaisen is available to read from Viz Media. The series can be read officially and for free by fans in Shonen Jump and Manga Plus application. The release date for the next chapter of JJK, Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 261, is set for May 26, 2024.
